Canyoning
Canyoning is an exciting activity. It involves descending a river bed as it winds it’s way forward. The activity utilises techniques from swimming and rock climbing.
Armed with a 5mm wetsuit to protect against the cold, a harness for any rope manoeuvers and a helmet one descends the torrent by either sliding down a natural toboggan, jumping, or by rigging a double rope and climbing down. This activity does not require any specific technical preparation only lots of enthusiasm.
In the Aosta Valley we have several mountain torrents. ‘Chalamy’ which is an easy descent or the ‘Fer’ which is more technically difficult.
Chalamy starts with a 20mtr rope descent and then there is an opportunity to do some small jumps which helps to build ones confidence. Then the descent of the torrent commences, the jumps become higher and higher (not obligatory) and there are several natural rock slides.
It is possible to take part in this activity for a weekend or for longer periods. We recommend Canyoning in Vallče de la Roya (France), a few kilometres from Ventimiglia and Mentone.
Canyons must be approached with respect and without undervalueing their innate dangers hence this activity is supervised by fully qualified guides who have undergone specialised training.
Mountain Experts will supply wetsuits, harnesses, helmets and any other technical materials needed for the activity.
You will need a swim suit, a pair of shoes that you are happy to wear in the water. Preferably trainers or trekking shoes/boots or you could treat yourself to a specific pair of shoes designed for canyoning.
